Paper Structure


Duration: Upto 120 minutes
The Olympiad will consist of three core sections:

Section A: Knowledge and Understanding (About Arts)
Format: Multiple Choice Questions (20 marks)
Purpose: To assess students’ foundational understanding of visual arts, including core concepts such as elements of art, color theory, shapes, art vocabulary, tools, and famous artists and artworks. This section supports students in building visual literacy and contextual awareness in both historical and contemporary art.
Question Types May Include:
  • Identifying elements of art such as line, shape, form, texture, value, and color
  • Understanding color theory: primary, secondary, warm and cool colors, complementary pairs
  • Identifying tools and materials with their correct names and functions
  • Differentiating between geometric and organic shapes
  • Recognizing famous artworks and identifying the artists
  • Understanding basic art-related vocabulary (e.g., symmetry, contrast, focal point, pattern, composition)
  • Associating art styles or periods (e.g., Impressionism, Cubism) with appropriate images (age-appropriate for upper bands)
Section B: Visual Reasoning
Format: Multiple Choice Questions (20 marks)
Purpose: To assess students' visual literacy, pattern recognition and analytical skills.
Question types may include:
  • Identifying patterns or visual sequences
  • Interpreting symbolism
  • Visual Analogies
  • Symmetry and Reflection
  • Color Logic & Theory
  • Shape Composition & Visual Closure
  • Matching / Sorting Tasks
Section C: Art-Making Task
Format: Drawing-based creative prompt (40 marks)
Purpose: To evaluate students' originality, composition skills, visual understanding, and use of elements and principles of art.
Task may include:
  • Drawing from imagination
  • Illustrating a theme
  • Expressing a concept visually
  • Incorporating given shapes/ objects creatively
Task will be marked on the following criteria:
  • Idea and Interpretation
  • Composition and Design
  • Technique and Skill
  • Creativity and Originality
  • Neatness and Completion
Note on Originality
All artwork submitted in this section must be the student’s own original composition, created in response to the prompt provided during the Olympiad. Copied artworks, traced images, or pieces directly inspired by existing artworks (from books, the internet, or other artists) will lead to disqualification.

Students are encouraged to think independently, observe the world around them, and express their unique ideas and interpretations. Originality, effort, and imagination are key values celebrated in the AJF Creator Arts Olympiad.
